Welcome from Frank and Roswitha, your hosts!
(The Eagle Watch is our year-round home. Here we are enjoying some "other-seasonal" weather!)
Located high on the banks of the Ninilchik River, The Eagle Watch provides clean, comfortable, and very affordable accomodations in a small and friendly setting which also serves as the owners’ residence. The facility has twenty beds available for a restful night’s sleep after the day's activities, whether they be fishing, sightseeing, or anything else you may dream up.
Ninilchik itself consists of two semi-distinct parts - the old Russian village and the newer town along the Sterling Highway. The village can be reached by Mission Road which leads seaward from the highway just south of the Ninilchik River bridge. Century-old architecture, much of it still used for private residence, the Transfiguration of Our Lord Russian Orthodox Church on the hill, and boats of all ages add to its charm. "Modern" Ninilchik provides you with all the conveniences you need - several restaurants (burgers to King crab), laundromat, post office, general store, churches, and bar.
Entertainment: The view is our TV. No satellite dish, cable, or antenna is to be found on the premises! A spectacular view of the river valley awaits every visitor, and depending on the whims of Ma Nature, moose, bears, beavers, otters, and of course, eagles may add to the scenery. The river provides spawning grounds for the King Salmon, and one can often distinguish individual fish as they mill around below.
How the Eagle Watch came to be: The Eagle Watch started out as a home built by Frank to raise the four Miller kids. Naturally, in the course of time, children more or less grow up and end up elsewhere. Roswitha, in her knowing way as housewife and mother, took notice of space that suddenly had attained the status of not being used. In a particularly astute moment, she foretold its fate: it would either be put to use or inexorably fill up with junk! Year-round renting seemed a bit painful, but a hostel appeared to be just the ticket. Since the summer of 1994 the house that Frank built (with his own two hands and several of his offsprings’) is open annually from May 15th through September 15th, and reservations are accepted for the summer starting April 1st every year.
Except for the portrait of your hosts, all images you see on this page, including the background, were shot from the Eagle Watch premises.
