RICHARD PRATT MARVINBorn Fairfield, Herkimer Co NY, December 23 1803, died Jan 11, 1892 Jamestown NY.Son of Selden MARVIN born Lyme CT, 24 Nov 1773/Sep 1832, and Charlotte PRATT, daughter of Benjamin PRATT and Sybil STOWE, born Saybrook CT.Selden MARVIN with his family removed in 1809 to Dryden , Thompkins Co NY where Richard was reared, working on the farm, and attending the district school until he was about 19., On leaving school, he pursued his studies in public schools and under private tutors , supporting himself by teaching. In 1826 he commenced the study of law with George W. SCOTT in Newark, Wayne Co NY. He continued the study with Mark H. SIBLEY of Canandaigua and Isaac SEELEY of Cherry Valley. In 1829 he was admitted an attorney of the supreme court, and a solicitor of the court of chancery, In June of 1829 he settled in Jamestown NY, where he resides now (1875)In September, 1834 he married to Isabella NEWLAND a daughter of Robert NEWLAND,their children were;1.)Selden Erastus MARVIN, born Aug. 20, 1835 adjutant of the 112th regiment , Civil War, paymaster on Gov. FENTON’S staff, and adjutant general of the state, General Selden E. MARVIN was married to Kate PARKER, daughter of Judge Amassa PARKER of Albany where they now reside;2.) Sarah Jane, born Oct. 18, 1836 wife of Erie L. HALL3.) David Newland Marvin, born Aug. 6, 1839, married Julia ORMES4.) Mary Elizabeth, July 3, 1841 married Benjamin Franklin GOODRICH5,)William R MARVIN, born 10 Nov 1843 died 17 Feb 1863of disease contracted in the Army of the Potomac.6.)Robert Newland Marvin, born Oct 13, 1845, married to Elizabeth WARNER7.) Richard Pratt Marvin, born May 30, 1848, married 1st, Jane MILLER, 2nd, Grace PERKINS8.)
