 Accomplishments

  • Olympic Gold Medallist in the 1980 Winter Olympic Games for the Disabled held in Geilo, Norway.  Medals were in the Slalom and Giant Slalom events.
  • World Class disabled athlete in other sports including sailing regattas, swimming, biking and kayaking.
  • Founder and President of the Board of Challenge Alaska, a non-profit agency that provides recreational and educational opportunities to the community and people who experience disabilities.
  • Chief fundraiser for the Challenge Alaska Sports, Recreation and Education Center for People with Disabilities, Girdwood Alaska.
  • Received the Ray Genet Memorial Award for Most Inspirational Athlete as voted by the Alaska Sports Council, 1980.  
  • Handicapped Alaskan of the Year, 1982.
  • Distinguished Handicapped American, 1983, Finalist, President's Trophy, 1983.
  • Outstanding Young Men of America, 1986
  • United Way Community Hero and Olympic Torch Runner, 1996.
  • Sporting Goods Manufacturing Association Hero Award, 1996.  One of ten Finalists for the SGMA National Award, 1996.
  • Member, Downtown Anchorage Rotary, Handicapped Committee, 1992-98.
  • Wheels for Peace (sending wheelchairs to Magadan, Russia), 1992.
  • Member National Speakers Association.
  • Outstanding Volunteer in Philanthropy, National Society of Fundraising Executives, Alaska Chapter, 1999.
  • Honored by The Alaska State Legislature, May 6, 1999.
  • Mayor's Award for Public Service, Anchorage, Alaska,  2000.
