Whittier Alaska

...located 47 miles Southeast of Anchorage and 80 miles North of Seward. Vechicles enter Whittier via the Anton Anderson Memorial Tunnel.It is the longest combined rail and highway tunnel in North America (2.5 miles). It is one lane that is shared with the railroad. The tunnel was open to vechicle traffic in June of 2000. Prior to that people would transport their vechicles and goods by way of railroad cars. Since it is a one way tunnel you can only leave Whittier at the top of the hour and enter Whittier at the bottom of the hour.There are several gift stores and places to eat along the water front.
