At about 4 1/2 mile Chena Hot Springs Road, Love Road takes off to the right, just past
the turn to Steele Creek Road. Drive to the cul-de-sac at the end of Love Road and park. This is
about a third of a mile. Follow the pipeline and look for trails going off to the left and right.
After some exploration you will find there are a few loops of varying lengths. To the right is Fort
Wainwright and you can ride onto back roads that will lead you to more trails or on to the Army’s
Birch Hill ski area. If you ride to the left, you end up by Nordale Road and can get on the Little
Chena River.
This area is good for beginners as it is level and the trails are usually in good shape but be
prepared as it is a low spot and can easily be 10-15 degrees colder than town. There is a least one
dog team that trains here so be on the lookout for them on the trails. Due to heavy use this is one
of the first places to get broken trails after a snowfall.
There is private property throughout this area, most of which is well marked. However,
following some of the trails you can suddenly find yourself on private property and you will have
to backtrack. When exploring any new area, especially ones with numerous cross-trails like this
area, use caution as it is easy to get disoriented. Remember dog teams are fast and very quiet.
Never stop on a blind corner and always pull off the trail when you do stop. Assume all other
users have the right-of-way.
