Text: Philippians 2:9-11 9 Wherefore God also hath highly exalted him, and given him a name which is above every name: 10 That at the name of Jesus every knee should bow, of things in heaven, and things in earth, and things under the earth; 11 And that every tongue should confess that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of God the Father.
INTRODUCTION: This characteristic is even more marvelous when we consider the fact that Jesus Christ is Lord. How much more should we endeavor to take this and other characteristics of Christ. Matthew 10:24-25 The disciple is not above his master, nor the servant above his lord. 25 It is enough for the disciple that he be as his master, and the servant as his lord. If they have called the master of the house Beelzebub, how much more shall they call them of his household?
By "the master of the household"; Jesus means himself, who is master of the family both in heaven and in earth; who is son over his own house, the high priest over the house of God, the Lord and governor of all the household of faith; who takes care of, provides for, and protects all that are of God's household. Yet, though in such an high office, and of such great usefulness, he did not escape the severest lashes of the tongues of the wicked Jews; who called him by the most humiliating names they could think of, and even that of Beelzebub.
I. IN ORDER TO CALL JESUS LORD, WE MUST RECOGNIZE HIS DEITY
A. HE IS ETERNAL Micah 5:2 whose goings forth have been from of old, from everlasting. John 1- 1 -2 In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. 2 The same was in the beginning with God. Heb. 13:8; Jesus Christ the same yesterday, and to day, and for ever. Rev. 1-8 1 am Alpha and Omega, the beginning and the ending, saith the Lord, which is, and which was, and which is to come, the Almighty.
B. HE IS CREATOR Col. 1:16 For by him were all things created, that are in heaven, and that are in earth, visible and invisible, whether they be thrones, or dominions, or principalities, or powers- all things were created by him, and for him.
C. HE IS EQUAL WITH THE FATHER Phil 2:6; Who, being in the form of God, thought it not robbery to be equal with God1 Tim. 3:16 And without controversy great is the mystery of godliness: God was manifest in the flesh, justified in the Spirit, seen of angels, preached unto the Gentiles, believed on in the world, received up into glory.
1. He is the head of all things. Col. 1-17-18; And he is before all things, and by him all things consist. 18 And he is the head of the body, the church- who is the beginning, the firstborn from the dead; that in all things he might have the preeminence. Eph 1:21-23; Far above all principality, and power, and might, and dominion, and every name that is named, not only in this world, but also in that which is to come: 22 And hath put all things under his feet, and gave him to be the head over all things to the church, 23 Which is his body, the fullness of him that filleth all in all. 4-15; 5:23; 1 Pet 2:7
2. He has full authority and power. Matt 28:18; And Jesus came and spake unto them, saying, All power is given unto me in heaven and in earth. Rom. 1-4; And declared to be the Son of God with power, according to the spirit of holiness, by the resurrection from the dead.
II. IN ORDER TO CALL JESUS LORD, WE MUST BE INDWELT BY THE HOLY SPIRIT
A. ONLY THOSE WHO HAVE BEEN BORN AGAIN HAVE THE HOLY SPIRIT. John 1- 11-12; He came unto his own, and his own received him not. 12 But as many as received him, to them gave he power to become the sons of God, even to them that believe on his name: Titus 3-5 Not by works of righteousness which we have done, but according to his mercy he saved us, by the washing of regeneration, and renewing of the Holy Ghost.
B. ALL WHO HAVE BEEN BORN AGAIN HAVE THE HOLY SPIRIT. Gal. 4-6-7 And because ye are sons, God hath sent forth the Spirit of his Son into your hearts, crying, Abba, Father. 7 Wherefore thou art no more a servant, but a son; and if a son, then an heir of God through Christ. 1 Cor. 3:16; Know ye not that ye are the temple of God, and that the Spirit of God dwelleth in you? Eph 1 - 13 In whom ye also trusted, after that ye heard the word of truth, the gospel of your salvation: in whom also after that ye believed, ye were sealed with that holy Spirit of promise.
Ill. IN ORDER TO CALL JESUS LORD, WE MUST BE IN COMPLETE OBEDIENCE TO HIM. Rom. 12-1-2 Luke 6-46 Matt. 7:21,16,20. Rom 12:1-2 I beseech you therefore, brethren, by the mercies of god, that ye present your bodies a living sacrifice, holy, acceptable unto god, which is your reasonable service. 2 and be not conformed to this world: but be ye transformed by the renewing of your mind, that ye may prove what is that good, and acceptable, and perfect, will of god mat. 7:16 ye shall know them by their fruits. Do men gather grapes of thorns, or figs of thistles? 20 wherefore by their fruits ye shall know them. 21 not every one that saith unto me, lord, lord, shall enter into the kingdom of heaven; but he that doeth the will of my father which is in heaven. Luke 6:46 and why call ye me, lord, lord, and do not the things which i say?
A. HE MUST BE LORD OF MY LIFE. Acts. 9:6 And he trembling and astonished said, Lord, what wilt thou have me to do? And the Lord said unto him, Arise, and go into the city, and it shall be told thee what thou must do.
B. HE MUST BE LORD OF MY BODY. 1 Cor. 6:18-20 Flee fornication. Every sin that a man doeth is without the body; but he that committeth fornication sinneth against his own body. 19 What? know ye not that your body is the temple of the Holy Ghost which is in you, which ye have of God, and ye are not your own? 20 For ye are bought with a price; therefore glorify God in your body, and in your spirit, which are God's. Rom. 6-11-13 Likewise reckon ye also yourselves to be dead indeed unto sin, but alive unto God through Jesus Christ our Lord. 12 Let not sin therefore reign in your mortal body, that ye should obey it in the lusts thereof. 13 Neither yield ye your members as instruments of unrighteousness unto sin- but yield yourselves unto God, as those that are alive from the dead, and your members as instruments of righteousness unto God. 1 Thes 4-3-7 For this is the will of God, even your sanctification, that ye should abstain from fornication: 4 That every one of you should know how to possess his vessel in sanctification and honour-, 5 Not in the lust of concupiscence, (denotes evil desire, indwelling sin.) even as the Gentiles which know not God: 6 That no man go beyond and defraud his brother in any matter: because that the Lord is the avenger of all such, as we also have forewarned you and testified. 7 For God hath not called us unto uncleanness, but unto holiness.
C. HE MUST BE LORD OF MY THOUGHTS. Psalms 19:14 Let the words of my mouth, and the meditation of my heart, be acceptable in thy sight, 0 LORD, my strength, and my redeemer. 2 Cor. 10:5 Casting down imaginations, and every high thing that exalteth itself against the knowledge of God, and bringing into captivity every thought to the obedience of Christ Phil 4-7-9 And the peace of God, which passeth all understanding, shall keep your hearts and minds through Christ Jesus. 8 Finally, brethren, whatsoever things are true, whatsoever things are honest, whatsoever things are just, whatsoever things are pure, whatsoever things are lovely, whatsoever things are of good report; if there be any virtue, and if there be any praise, think on these things. 9 Those things, which ye have both learned, and received, and heard, and seen in me, do- and the God of peace shall be with you.
D. HE MUST BE LORD OF MY ATTITUDES. Matt. 18:21-22 Then came Peter to him, and said, Lord, how oft shall my brother sin against me, and I forgive him? till seven times? 22 Jesus saith unto him, I say not unto thee, Until seven times: but, Until seventy times seven. Luke 6:27-28 But I say unto you which hear, Love your enemies, do good to them which hate you, 28 Bless them that curse you, and pray for them which despitefully use you. 1 Pet. 2:18-25 Servants, be subject to your masters with all fear,- not only to the good and gentle, but also to the froward. 19 For this is thankworthy, if a man for conscience toward God endure grief, suffering wrongfully. 20 For what glory is it, if, when ye be buffeted for your faults, ye shall take it patiently? but if, when ye do well, and suffer for it, ye take it patiently, this is acceptable with God. 21 For even hereunto were ye called: because Christ also suffered for us, leaving us an example, that ye should follow his steps: 22 Who did no sin, neither was guile found in his mouth: 23 Who, when he was reviled, reviled not again; when he suffered, he threatened not; but committed himself to him that judgeth righteously- 24 Who his own self bare our sins in his own body on the tree, that we, being dead to sins, should live unto righteousness: by whose stripes ye were healed. 25 For ye were as sheep going astray; but are now returned unto the Shepherd and Bishop of our souls.
E. HE MUST BE LORD OF MY WORDS. Psa. 19-14 Let the words of my mouth, and the meditation of my heart, be acceptable in thy sight, 0 LORD, my strength, and my redeemer. Psa. 141:3; Set a watch, 0 LORD, before my mouth; keep the door of my lips. Pro. 18-6-8 A fool's lips enter into contention, and his mouth calleth for strokes. 7 A fool's mouth is his destruction, and his lips are the snare of his soul. 8 The words of a talebearer are as wounds, and they go down into the innermost parts of the belly. Matt. 15:11. Not that which goeth into the mouth defileth a man; but that which cometh out of the mouth, this defileth a man.
F. HE MUST BE LORD OF MY ASSOCIATIONS. 2 Cor. 6:14-18: Be ye not unequally yoked together with unbelievers: for what fellowship hath righteousness with u n righteousness? and what communion hath light with darkness? 15 And what concord hath Christ with Belial? or what part hath he that believeth with an infidel? 16 And what agreement hath the temple of God with idols? for ye are the temple of the living God; as God hath said, I will dwell in them, and walk in them; and I will be their God, and they shall be my people. 17 Wherefore come out from among them, and be ye separate, saith the Lord, and touch not the unclean thing: and I will receive you, 18 And will be a Father unto you, and ye shall be my sons and daughters, saith the Lord Almighty.
G. HE MUST BE LORD OF MY EMOTIONS: Eph 4-22-26 That ye put off concerning the former conversation the old man, which is corrupt according to the deceitful lusts, 23 And be renewed in the spirit of your mind; 24 And that ye put on the new man, which after God is created in righteousness and true holiness. 25 Wherefore putting away lying, speak every man truth with his neighbour: for we are members one of another. Gal. 5:22-25 But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, pea--.-, longsuffering, gentleness, goodness, faith, 23 Meekness, temperance: against such there is no law, 24 And they that are Christ's have crucified the flesh with the affections and lusts. {affections: or, passions 25 If we live in the Spirit, let us also walk in the Spirit.
H. HE MUST BE LORD OF MY POSSESSIONS: Phil 3-8 Yea doubtless, and I count all things but loss for the excellency of the knowledge of Christ Jesus my Lord: for whom I have suffered the loss of all things, and do count them but dung, that I may win Christ, 1 Tim. 6:6-11 But godliness with contentment is great gain. 7 For we brought nothing into this world, and it is certain we can carry nothing out. 8 And having food and raiment let us be therewith content. Matt 6:24 No man can serve two masters: for either he will hate the one, and love the other; or else he will hold to the one, and despise the other. Ye cannot serve God and mammon. A But seek ye first the kingdom of God, and his righteousness; and all these things shall be added unto you. Phil 4:19 But my God shall supply all your need according to his riches in glory by Christ Jesus.
I. HE MUST BE LORD OF MY GIVING: 2 Cor. 9:5-7 Therefore I thought it necessary to exhort the brethren, that they would go before unto you, and make up beforehand your bounty, whereof ye had notice before, that the same might be ready, as a matter of bounty, and not as of covetousness. 6 But this I say, He which soweth sparingly shall reap also sparingly; and he which soweth bountifully shall reap also bountifully. 7 Every man according as he purposeth in his heart, so let him give; not grudgingly, or of necessity: for God loveth a cheerful giver.
J. HE MUST BE LORD OF MY HOME: Josh. 24,15 And if it seem evil unto you to serve the LORD, choose you this day whom ye will serve; whether the gods which your fathers served that were on the other side of the flood, or the gods of the Amorites, in whose land ye dwell: but as for me and my house, we will serve the LORD. Psa. 127:1 Except the LORD build the house, they labour in vain that build it.
CONSLUSION: It is time for us to make up our minds. Either Jesus Christ is Lord of all, or else He is not Lord at all.
